Costa Rican snake collected once in Siquirres, Limon Province in the 1930s. But a recent discovered photograph of a unknown Trimetopon La Selva, Heredia Province is believed to represent this species.
The holotype collected in the 1930s is now lost.

Justification: This species is listed as Critically Endangered because it is known from a single location that has suffered from severe habitat loss. The species has been looked for repeatedly for 85 years without success, and may now be extinct. www.iucnredlist.org/species/203606/2769081

Moved back to extinct (in agreement with the IUCN account). Savage state that the Selva example has a white venter unlike Trimetopon viquezi. books.google.de/books?id=HDNQ2bba3QcC&pg=PA640&lpg=PA640&dq=Trimetopon+La+Selva,+Heredia+Province&source=bl&ots=WG6GEfeqAI&sig=qfyQfdUepvQJ6sqCkskiqFy-j08&hl=de&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwikks7fud7JAhVEcQ8KHbIlDZMQ6AEIITAA#v=onepage&q=Trimetopon%20La%20Selva%2C%20Heredia%20Province&f=false
