It is known only from the vicinity of the type locality (Fitzpatrick, 1996). Recent attempts by the Mississippi Natural Heritage Program and Mississippi Museum of Natural Science to collect the species have been fruitless.
This species was located in Carrollton, Carroll County, Mississippi (Fetzner 2008). However, recent attempts to locate this species in Caroll County weere unsuccessful, as the habitat was not suitable. Furthermore, burrows, which may be from this species, were seen in Caroll County, Alabama, and targeted surveys are planned. In addition, it is thought that it may be locally Extinct in Mississippi (S. Adams. pers. comm. 2009).
Procambarus cometes, P. connus, and P. pogum are listed as full species by Fitzpatrick (1978). Due to errors in his descriptions and key, Schuster et al. (2015) find Fitzpatrick's paper to be without taxonomic value and synonymized these three taxa with P. h. vesticeps. Crandall and De Grave (2017) recognized all 3, but here we follow Schuster et al. (2015) and WoRMS (accessed April 2023) in synonymizing P. cometes, P. connus and P. pogum with P. h. vesticeps.
