Winge (1906) described T. cristatellus on the basis of a large skull from the late Pleistocene–Holocene of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, with flat frontals and parietals and latefused sutures. The validity of this species was questioned by Paula-Couto (1979) and Tonni (1992), but it was recognized by Cartelle (1999) and Holanda et al. (2007) based on new finds. www.bioone.org/doi/pdf/10.1644/10-MAMM-A-144.1

Winge (1906) described T. cristatellus, from the late Pleistocene deposits of Lagoa Santa, Minas Gerais, based on cranial, dental and postcranial remains. This species was later considered a synonym of T. terrestris (Paula Couto, 1979), but recently Cartelle (1999), based on new material, supported its validity www.sbpbrasil.org/revista/edicoes/9_2/RBP9-2-cozzuol.pdf
