It is rarely seen below 1,000 m asl, and it is considered to be uncommon (Panama Red List Assessment Workshop August 2019). Between 2011–2012, up to four individuals were observed during several nights of surveys, however between 2015–2017 frequent visits were only able to find a single individual despite high search effort (A. Batista pers. comm. August 2019). The population, and specifically the number of mature individuals, are believed to be declining, but the cause of declines remains uncertain (Panama Red List Assessment Workshop August 2019).
