The population of this species has declined, it was abundant in the past. Surveys in 2003, 2004, and 2006 by multiple researchers were unsuccessful in finding any animals in suitable habitat. Recent studies performed by Eduardo Pineda and his group and by Sean Rovito found 1 specimen at Las Vigas (2010, Rovito) and 2 specimens at La Joya (2012 Pineda and Aguilar Lopez).
This species was previously abundant, however it has experienced population declines over the last 40–50 years (S. Rovito pers. comm. October 2019). Surveys in 1997 recorded 16 individuals near the type locality (Parra-Olea et al. 1999). Surveys conducted in 2003, 2004, and 2006 by multiple researchers were unsuccessful in finding any individuals in suitable habitat. Additional surveys found one specimen at Las Vigas (S. Rovito pers. comm. 2010), two specimens at La Joya (E. Pineda and J. L. Aguilar Lopez pers. comm. 2012), and 16 individuals in 2016 near the type locality, but surveys to other sites in 2016 did not record the species (A. Soto and S. Rovito pers. comm. October 2019).
