There is hardly any information about this species. The holotype was collected in 1897 from a headwater area on Kauai and in 1999 four individuals were collected from the same island in another headwater area. Whether the species is genuine rare, populations have declined or is simply difficult to find, is not clear. Since invasive species have had a detrimental effect on other Megalagrion species in the Hawaiian Archipelago, Megalagrion williamsoni is listed as Critically Endangered and urgent measures are needed to get new information on this species and to protect the known population.
