Rentz’s Strong Stick-insect (Davidrentzia valida) is endemic to Lord Howe Island, an island 700 km apart from the mainland Australia (Brock and Hasenpusch 2009). To date, it is only known from two different localities on the island (H. Bower pers. comm. 2017). Even presuming that the species is distributed across the entire island, its extent of occurrence (EOO) would only be 37 km². The actual area of occupancy (AOO) of the species is inferred to be further restricted, potentially even being confined to 10 km² or less.
No information on the population size and trend are available. The species was only known from the female type specimen, which was collected in 1988, for several years. However, since 2009 about 12 additional sightings have been reported (H. Bower pers. comm. 2017). Due to the ongoing threat of invasive rodents on the island, which already lead to the local extinction of the stick-insect species Dryococelus australis, the population is inferred to be small and to continuously decline.
