The species was formerly present in marshes and open plains adjacent to rivers on Luzon but this population (possibly an endemic race G. antigone luzonica: Hachisuka 1941) was evidently extirpated earlier this century (Dickinson et al. 1991). A search of Luzon in 1979 (Madsen 1981) failed to locate any birds and the species was thought probably extinct. Records are from Ilocos Norte (Dickinson et al. 1991), Cagayan province (McGregor 1909_1910), Tabuk in Kalinga-Apayao province (Johnsgard 1983), Isabela province (McGregor 1909_1910), Nueva Ecija province (McGregor 1909_1910), Candaba marsh (McGregor 1909_1910) and near Lopez, east of Tayabas, Quezon province (Dickinson et al. 1991).
It was formerly present in marshes and open plains adjacent to rivers on Luzon but this population was evidently extirpated in the twentieth century (Dickinson et al. 1991). Searches in the 1970s and 1980s were unsuccessful (Madsen 1981, Dickinson et al. 1991).

Is that really a valid subspecies? I have always thought Grus antigone is monotypic.

Grus antigone are today seperated in at least two subspecies, one in Australia and the other on the Asian mainland, most also reckognize Grus antigone luzonica as valid, but its disputed.

The Sarus Crane has three subspecies: the Indian (G. a. antigone), Eastern (G. a. sharpii), and Australian (G. a. gilli). The Philippine Sarus Crane (G. a. luzonica), which is presumed to be extinct, may have been a discrete subspecies www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/distr/birds/cranes/evol.htm

The Eastern Sarus Crane Grus antigone sharpii, now extinct in the Philippines, was last recorded in Agusan Marsh in 1965.

This race is now considered to be a synonym of A. a. sharpii (HBW, HM4, Hume & Walters, 2012).
