Comprehensive snail surveys of this area have not been undertaken recently, and it is possible that species reported prior to 1945 may still exist, and that other rare snails reported from outside the reserve may be present in the reserve. Two other Achatinella species have been recorded from the Mount Kaala area, though not since 1945. Achatinella lehuiensis, historically found elsewhere in the Waianae Mountains, was last collected in 1936 from Haleauau Gulch; Achatinella thaanumi is known only from Haleauau Gulch (Christensen 1983). Pleuropoma sandwichiensis, another rare land snail, was reported in 1987 from north of the reserve, and could exist at lower elevations within the reserve. 64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:IhhwSUTmAqIJ:www.dofaw.net/nars/files/mtkaalaplan.doc+%22Achatinella+thaanumi%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=19
