The Vancouver Island Wolverine ( Gulo gulo vancouverensis) was last seen in 1992, and is feared extinct: "Two subspecies of wolverines are recognized in Canada (Hall 1981); G. g. luscus, found across Canada, and G. g. vancouverensis, found on Vancouver Island. Banci (1982) found little evidence for classifying the Vancouver Island population as a distinct subspecies, however it is still recognized as such (Nagorsen 1990)." Source: wolverinefoundation.org/distribution/I have not read (Banci, 1982) so I don't know how convincing the evidence is for the synonymy of G. g. vancouverensis and G. g. luscus. However, it is not listed amongst the formerly recognized species of mammals on this forum so I list it here as a potentially extinct subspecies, if it is valid.

According to Handbook of the Mammals of the World (2009) there are only two subspecies of the wolverine. Also MSW 3 (2005) is recognizing only the nominate form G. g. gulu and the subspecies G. g. luscus. www.bucknell.edu/msw3/browse.asp?s=y&id=14001167Moved to formerly recognized extinct mammals
