Justification: This species is listed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) as it is known from a single location, it has an estimated area of occupancy as low as 3 km2, and an extent of occurrence not much larger, there is a continuing decline in the extent and quality of forest and agricultural habitats within its range due to deforestation and urban expansion to support the oil industry, and because failures to rediscover this species despite intensive, long-term surveys in and around the type locality strongly suggest a decline in the area of occupancy of this lizard, and possibly its complete extinction. This species is only known from the type locality in eastern Nigeria, described as "Okoloma Village near Port Harcourt" (Gans 1987). The area of occupancy is estimated to be approximately 3 km2. Nothing is known about the population status of this species; however, the type description indicates that 20 specimens were found within 1,500 square yards, and two more were found nearby (Dunger 1968). However, fifteen years of very intensive herpetological field research by a team lead by L. Luiselli and G.C. Akani (which included the village where this species was found) did not produce any further specimens. Hence, it seems very likely that this species is actually extremely rare and localized in the study area. Source: www.iucnredlist.org/details/summary/203808/0
