This species is most likely extinct; habitat in Ohio has been adversely impacted by impoundments and the only other historic records were the lower ends of two tributaries where it is now extirpated.
Burch (1989) cites the Ohio River, Cincinnati, Ohio, to Louisville, Kentucky; the Little Miami River, Ohio, near its mouth; and Five-mile Creek, Campbell Co., Kentucky. Branson and Batch (1981) documented an occurrence at the Licking River in Pendleton Co., Kentucky in 1964 that was subsequently lost when a dam released cold water into the habitat.
