During excavations of the Pyramid valley swamp in North Cantebury during 1931-41, bones were found.
Storrs Olson later concluded that this belong to a dinstinct species - now known as Malacorhynchus Scarletti which he named after Ron Scarlett of the Cantebury Museum.
the bones have been dated to be 3,500 yrs old
