Today i was in the art gallery of Schloss Wilhelmshoehe in Kassel. There is currently an interesting exhibition called Dialogues. On one of the paintings titled Orpheus among the wild animals (which was painted by one of Roeland Savery's descendents after 1640) there is a small Dodo in the forest background. Well this painting might be an answer of Roeland Savery's (the older) famous 1610 painting (Orpheus charming with the animals) which has the most famous depiction of the dodo. The most interesting thing to me was, that this painting belongs to the Wilhelmshoehe art gallery since 1945 and that it was restaurated for this exhibition. Unfortunately it is not allowed to make photos in the art gallery.

There where several depictions of the Dodo by Savery and his descendents during the 17th century. And one of Savery's dodos was the model for Lewis Carroll's dodo in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

And one of Savery's dodos was the model for Lewis Carroll's dodo in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The dodo in that lovely lovely book is even supposed to have been a somewhat awkward portrait of Carroll himself. His real name was Charles Dodgson and yes he was a stammerer introducing himself as Do-dodgson.

Wow, what a pic! The feathery dodo looks terrified of the advancing ghost-dodo.
