Olson (1981) reported finding fossils of an undescribed, extinct flightless rail on the main island. He briefly added that the species did not closely resemble any rail from the mainland of Brazil. Fernando de Noronha is a group of Islands laying of the north-eatern coast of Brazil www.ecology.info

Olson, S. L. (1981): Natural history of vertebrates on the Brazilian islands of the mid South Atlantic. Natl. Geogr. Soc. Res. Rep. 13: 481-492. I wonder that Olson still hasitate to describe this taxon. Remains of a new species of rail (Rallidae) were also found, bringing the total known land-bird fauna to four species. Most of the elements ofthe skele- ton, from several different individuals, are represented. This was a medium- size rail with the wings reduced, but to a lesser extent than in many flightless species. It does not appear to be particularly close morphologically to any of the species of rails from mainland Brazil. I have briefly alluded to this form elsewhere (Olson, 1977b), but it has yet to be formally described

Melanie, did he state whether the species has been collected from elsewhere in the archipelago?

Melanie, did he state whether the species has been collected from elsewhere in the archipelago? No. The above cited comment is all what he stated.

I wonder when this species will be described?

I wonder when this species will be described? Good question. I don't think that Olsen will get old enough to describe this species. Maybe one of his younger colleagues will do this. Olsen's last comment to that topic was four years ago (see some posts above this one).
