Maupiti Monarch Pomarea pomarea is known only from the type, collected on Maupiti, Society Islands, French Polynesia, by Blosseville in 1823. It presumably became extinct soon after, because it has not been recorded since, and the Society Islands have lost most of their original vegetation and their avifauna has suffered greatly through competition and predation from introduced species. Taxonomy The taxon is a valid species and not conspecific with Tahiti Monarch P. nigra. Note, however, that the claimed extinct race P. nigra tabuensis of Tonga is in fact based on a misidentification of Polynesian Triller Lalage maculosa.

Pomarea pomarea from Maupiti (Society Islands) is only known from a painting (dated 1828). So there has to be an image! Only I have not seen it yet! I've found this information in the following article (I don't have full access). Contemporary extinctions and population declines of the monarchs (Pomarea spp.) in French Polynesia, South Pacific. Authors: Thibault J-C.; Meyer J-Y. Source: Oryx, January 2001, vol. 35, no. 1, pp. 73-80(8) Publisher: Blackwell Publishing Abstract: Four species of monarchs (Pomarea spp.) presently inhabit French Polynesia, one on Tahiti and three on the Marquesas Islands. Although all species populations were abundant during the nineteenth century or at the beginning of the twentieth century, their range and population numbers have recently decreased dramatically: intensive field surveys conducted between 1998 and 2000 reveal that four subspecies are now extinct from five islands in the Marquesas in the last decades. Introduction of the black rat is the major cause of extinction and decline, now amplified by new threats such as aggressive introduced birds and invasive alien plants reducing suitable habitats for breeding. www.ingentaconnect.com/content/bsc/oryx/2001/00000035/00000001/art00148Maybe someone has this article?

I have a homepage about extinct animals and plants, but it is not online at this time. I will tell You when it goes online. So, I hope that there is a picture of that Maupiti-Bird because I will paint it for my extinct-site. Thank You all for reading und helping me ! Alex

Alex, many members here don't have English as their first language! Including me, as I'm from the Netherlands. But your English is very good!
I would be very interested in your website on extinct plants and animals! So tell us indeed when it will be online!

Hello Peter ! Thank You, very nice. My website is readdy, but not online. The pictures must be worked on. They are to big, You know. I try to paint all species and I have made pictures for most every bird-species and most of the mammals. A lot of frogs and some of reptiles, invertebrates and plants. The site is in german but I want to make it also in english. But the scientific names are the same, and pictures can be seen whithout language. Do You got good news for me from the Maupiti-Monarch ? I can't wait. At this time I do paint all the other Pomarea-species and supspecies, they are so beautyfull. For the Maupiti-bird I don't need a picture at all, a good description would be enough. But to know that it was black and white is unfortunally not enough. Okay, enough for now. Bye Alex

Not yet! I'm at this moment in a village near Eindhoven, where my parents and live. And most of my firends live also here in the neighbourhood. It is in the south of the Netherlands, near Belgium.
To read that article I need to go to my own home in Leeuwarden, in the north of the Netherlands. I think I will go there monday or tuesday.
