I'm sorry for the low progress rate, that's because I'm lacking time due to college and work.

Hi! Thank you tasmaniantiger! Yes, I am the same RSN from Zoo Tycoon community. You are that tasmaniantiger from Zoo Admin that have made animals with superb 3D models (Thylacine, Fallow Deer, False Killer Whale, etc)?

Rafael Silva do Nascimento (RSN), living in São Paulo (Brazil), has offered to help renaming topics in a standardized way, so that people who have less knowledge about scientific names will be better able to search the many boards. From today he will be a moderator of this forum! I'm happy to welcome him to our moderating team! Peter

Yes, there is that possibility. We can rename topics. It is a good idea, but a lot of work. So it would take a lot of time. I agree, that when you aren't well known with the scientific names, it can sometimes be hard to figure out what species is in a certain topic. I will gradually rename topics on specific species this way. Any help is always welcome of course.

Hi! What about the topics having a default in the way the species names are depicted? For example:Species with common names: Raphus cucullatus (Dodo)Species without common names: Barbus microbarbis There's the possibility to rename the topics? I think that will help in the organization and search in the forum.

As this project has been on hold most of the past summer, I want to fire it up again.... We need a place where we all can create and edit the e-book. This forum is not the best place for it, not easy to edit. Personally I think a wiki would be the best solution. But I want to know what the other participants think of it. At the end it must not an e-book by me or The Sixth Extinction, but it must be one of us all! A while back I created a wiki: http://www.petermaas.nl/extinct/wiki/index.php I created it to test the MediaWiki software for a photo gallery, but it is not working as I want it to be (probably due to my knowledge of the software). We can use it for this e-book project. Feel free to edit it. Or install this software somewhere else (on my server or the server of one of the other participants). Or some other wiki software. Any ideas?

The release date of the upcoming v5 update has yet to be determined. I have signed up for the ProBoards V5 Beta, so that I can test and see it: http://www.proboards.com/beta/ . I hope it will be released very soon, because I dislike this problem as well. This forum with its many many posts quite depends on the search function. Peter

Indeed. They state that it was once thought to be rare, so I guess that is referring to the two original sightings.

Some years ago. I can't remember how many. 7-8, 10, maybe even 15 years ago there was something in the news about a forearm of an unknown pleistocene carnivore having turned up from the Siberian permafrost. On TV you could see serious men in white coats standing around the furry brown slender limb on an operation table. Never had they seen anything like it. Of course it was a hoax, a joke or a misunderstanding or I would have heard more about it or been able to find out about it through the oracle known as Google. But what was it really? Does anyone remember this? By the way I'm also a bit interested in well done hoaxes and fakes like the Piltdown skull, van Meegeren's paintings, Becker's coins and the City of Light (possibly, yeah likely) and so on and that's the reason for a question that might seem a bit pointless - Cheers!

As to Pteropus aruensis the IUCN states that K. Helgen (pers. comm.) believes P. aruensis to be synonymous with P. keyensis. It also states that a toothless jaw was found in 1992 in a kitchen midden. Hence I am unsure whether that individual to which the jaw belonged was relatively contemporary to the find, or whether it represents sub-fossil material, in which case it would be completely undiagnostic of its current status.

Some corrections to the list. - Acerodon jubatus lucifer; invalid, treated as a synonym of A. jubatus. - Harpiola grisea; rediscovered. - Nyctophilus walkeri; common throughout northern Australia. - Pteropus aruensis; trophy jaws collected in the Aru Islands in the 1990s, hence unlikely to be extinct. - Pteropus gilliardorum; rediscovered.

Also its status should maybe be added. As many are officially considered extinct (e.g. IUCN), while others are considered 'possibly extinct', species that might survive somewhere or that still need a survey, etc. The recent rediscoveries show that we need to be cautious with declaring a (sub)species as extinct.

We have indeed to be carefull that it don't becomes too massive. That can maybe if we want in a later stage and than one just for mammals, one just for reptiles, etc. Maybe a short summary of its population history (where known) per species combined with the causes of extinction? So that it will become some sort of encyclopedia. I will check the various animal and plant encyclopedias I have, maybe I will come up with another idea. Also how to group the different species? Taxonomically I gues, per class, order, family, genus, species and subspecies.

What exact information should we include? Obviously the scientific name and any commons names are necessary. As is the last known recorded date of the species' existence, its geographical location, and the believed causes of its extinction. But what other fields? We have to be careful though because there are so many recently extinct species, especially birds and plants that if we include lots of detail the e-book will be absolutely MASSIVE...

Hello everyone, From now we will show each month another species on the start page of this forum, the 'Species of the Month'. You can choose the species for next month. It can be every animal, plant or other organism that has a thread in this forum. The only criteria is that there is an image we can use (a free image or one with permission). If there is not an image we can use: find one! You can reply here with the nomination for next month!

I'm running an Ecolympics to raise awareness about the human impact on the environment and consequent species loss and we just ordered our t-shirts... they have our Ecolympics logo, and a tree (for International Year of Forests) and our slogan, Competing for Team Earth. And they're made from organic cotton. I tell you all this not to sell you one, but to encourage you to make your own. We ordered ours from Custom Ink -- super easy. Ordering only a handful might be pricey, but hey, you could start a trend... just in case, blog always needs more traffic:http://ecolympics.blogspot.com/2011/03/guess-endangered-species.html

In 1987, out of a potential 30,000 toads, only 29 survived because unusually warm and dry conditions dried and evaporated their breeding pools. Some say that deforestation killed the adults, and their are some beliefs that they are just hiding until the conditions are right. Their rapid demise is just one example of how humans are reducing biodiversity.

I reported the search engine problems again to Proboards. See if we get an answer. Also searching manually I cannot find the thread. It seems it isn't here as suggested. If it has been here before, I guess it has somehow been deleted, although at the moment I cannot see or find when or why.

It definitely isn't in the Holocene extinct Primates area now (there are only 28 entries, less than a page) so it would be impossible to miss it, so it must have been deleted (though sometime ago if it doesn't show up in the Security Log). Unless there is a small chance that you never posted such a thread Baghira?

Baghira, are you sure it has been deleted? Because I cannot find anything about it in the forum's Security Log (in which I can see all modifications, moves and deletions). When was that thread posted? And around what time its last post? So that I can search better in the Security Log. Our policy is not to delete such threads. And certainly not without discussion. Only spam etc.

The only differences between holomelas and edwardsi were colouration and size. As no morphological differences have been noticed between the two taxa, I would say that holomelas is just a melanistic version (or just a darker form) of edwardsi. The reason holomelas it is claimed to be smaller than edawrdsi is because all specimens caught have been significantly smaller. However this may be due to a bias in the rate of predation, as holomelas wouldn't be as well camouflaged and would be more easily visible to predators. It would therefore, on average, not survive as long (and hence not grow as large) as edwardsi. However, I may be wrong, but the lack of any definitive morphological differences whatsoever between the two taxa indiciate to me that they are conspecific.

Hello everyone, As many of you have already noticed, the name of 'The Extinction Website' has been changed into 'The Sixth Extinction, a website about the current biodiversity crisis'. This website has been given a new layout and I'm currently very busy updating all the pages. This forum is part of the main website, so the forum's name has been changed from 'The Extinction Website Forum' into 'The Sixth Extinction, a forum about the current biodiversity crisis'. And the default skin of the forum has been changed so that it is similar to that of the main website. The old skins are still available and you can set the skin you want to use in your profile. If you need help doing this, feel free to ask me or one of the other moderators. Best wishes, Peter

Foxes were introduced into Australia in the Early 1800's for recreational hunting, so the English could dress up in fancy clothes and ride around the country on horses with a pack of dogs. It is sometimes incorrectly stated that Foxes were introduced to control Rabbits. Wild Rabbits did not become a problem on Mainland Australia until Wild Rabbits were deliberately introduced in 1859. This was several decades after foxes were introduced. Despite this new threat, Platypuses are able to thrive, and now that they are totally protected they are doing all right. The Northern parts of Australia are not so good for Platypuses. It is probable that the Crocodiles eat them _________________facebook layouts | Free Backgrounds

Scientists fear they could be indicator species -- a sign of possible future damage to other parts of the ecosystem because frogs and toads are especially vulnerable and thus are the first to disappear. "Disappearing amphibians break links in the food chain, with often unpredictable effects on other organisms," the report said. Governments should strengthen controls at existing nature reserves and encourage the breeding of endangered species in captivity if they are to save frogs, NatureServe says. They should also foster research on the recently discovered chytrid fungal disease, which is killing frogs, and educate the public about the plight of amphibians, it said. "We have to change the idea that they are ugly and slimy. They are beautiful, diverse species, just like hummingbirds or butterflies," said Martin Bustamante, herpetologist at Ecuador's Catholic University. ____________________facebook layouts | Free Backgrounds

You're right! Thanks. These feather and others like it were used to teach school children about the Huia. They are indeed quite similar.

Hello! I have photos from these three species.: Labrador Duck (Camptorhynchus labrdorius ) Laughing Owl (Sceloglaux albifacies ) Norfolk Island Pigeon (Hemiphaga spadicea ) scanned from Erroll Fuller 'Extinct Birds', the quality is somewhat bad, but in the original it is bad too You may furthermore find photos of Huia feathers and feathers of unidentifiable Moa species in the internet. I hope that is alittle help for You!

Hi! I am desperately looking for some photographs or drawings of feathers from extinct birds (particularly recently extinct birds, as well as 1600 onwards). I suppose not all are documented but as many photos of feathers from extinct birds would be amazing. I am an artist, and i'm doing some work about extinct birds. i would prefer pictures of individual feathers if they exist. I am willing to buy a book if anyone can point me in the right direction. Much appreciated!
