According to this paper this species survived into the Holocene since the last known record dates back to 10,345 from Cueva Del Puma, Patagonia, Chile.

Presence of Arctotherium (Carnivora, Ursidae, Tremarctinae) in a pre-cultural level of Baño Nuevo-1 cave (Central Patagonia, Chile).
