Apparently, the local form - Damaliscus phalius is synonymum for
Damaliscus selousi. As in scientific language, just let the law priorities.

It is distributed in Ankole district of SW Uganda, extending to the Rutshuru Plains over the border in DRC and Akagera National Park in Uganda according to Groves & Grubb (2011) who treated it as an distinct species.

In which case it is still extant in Akagera NP (ca. 770 animals in 1999), Virunga NP (ca. 3500 animals in 1981) and probably elsehwere as well.

It is treated as an distinct species by Groves & Leslie (2011) but considered endemic to the Uasin Gishu Plains in Kenya from where it has not been recorded in recent times and probably became extinct in the early 20th century. Uasin Gishu County is located in the former Rift Valley Province, which is the the county's commercial centre which makes me assume that the Topi population there became extinct primarily as a result of habitat destruction/hunting.

To me it all seems very contradictary, maybe it would be a good idea to send an e-mail to Colin Groves to try and get some clarification.
