Nalo malila (Drosophila toxochaeta) was last seen in 1973, but according to the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service it was believed to be extant in the 1980s based on historical collection
records, habitat assessments, and surveys by Drosophila researchers [342]. It was not found
in more recent surveys, leading the agency to delare the species extinct.

This species was believed to be extant based on historical collection records, habitat assessments, and surveys back in the 1980's by Drosophila researchers. However, this species hasn't been seen since 1997, when careful efforts by researchers at the University of Hawaii to recollect these species failed. It is now believed to be extinct (USFWS, 1997).
