Much mystery surrounds the discovery and whereabouts of the Turkestanian salamander. The species is only known from several individuals collected in 1909; all the collected specimens have since been lost and no other records are known. The species range was described as being "between Pamir and Samarkand" – an area which is possibly in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan or Uzbekistan, though the exact collection localities are not known. Attempts to map its distribution have been based on the area most suitable for salamanders within the expedition route of the original collector. Status: last seen in 1909, listed as Data Deficient on IUCN Red List sp10.conservation.org/learn/biodiversity/species/profiles/amphibians/Pages/Hynobius_turkestanicus.aspx
