"The species is only known from the type series, collected in 1994 from a mountain stream near Tai Tong village, New Territories, Hong Kong (Cai and Ng 1999). The area is subjected to extensive urbanization with resulting problems in freshwater pollution in the area. Further, as the exact location of the stream from which the specimens were obtained is not known, there is a clear danger that it may already have been incorporated into the urban landscape and be ecologically unsuitable for this species. As the species is only known from a single location with an established threat to its quality of habitat, it is considered as Critically Endangered under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii). Urgent surveys are required to establish if the species is still extant and if so to identify the distribution of the species in the wider area."

Cognitio Sapiens Ngensis was launched the atyid shrimp Investigation Project from Macao and Hong Kong in September 2023, we began to conduct a careful investigating around the enigmatic species (Caridina apodosis Cai et N.K. Ng, 1999 ) during December, it was a suspected (critical endangered) species in Yuen Long Plain, Hong Kong. We conducted a survey in the Tai Tong Village area firstly, unfortunately, the investigation was carried out but with none of little success; we had to expand the scope to the Tai Lam area where is closed near to Tai Tong, and finally the similar anatomical features individuals were found in a stream not far from the typical locality.

According to originally published paper, the body color of living shrimps are unavailable and mismatching the structure for end of the first endopod pair from the male was found, it was questioned: its attributes should belong to other genus that is widely distributed in the habitat but not well-known. This was confirmed by finding the key chrematistic from the male, at the end of the first endopod pair is round and flat (inside the red circle from the above picture is shown), it was identified as Neocardina as well. By the same time, it was found that the number of teeth from lower edge of the rostrum of the specimens are also not match for the known 4 subspecies., and has exceeded the identification range of this species, but the structures from other parts are not seem to transcend the differences between species, so it is proposed as a new subspecies.

Records of Caridina apodosis from Hong Kong on iNaturalist belongs to this new subspecies (Neocaridina palmata yuenlongense), which looks similar to Caridina apodosis and it was previously known as Caridina aff. apodosis.
