This species is endemic to Tanzania, where it has only been found in a small area of moist tropical forest in the Uluguru Mountains (Spawls et al. 2002) around the villages of Nyange and Vituri. It has recently been rediscovered in the northern part of the Uluguru Nature Reserve, but a study in the southern part of the reserve did not record any specimens (W. Ngalason pers. comm. 2014). Pitfall trap surveys in the region have not recorded this snake anywhere else in the Uluguru range (Spawls et al. 2002), and it is thought likely to have an extent of occurrence below 100 km2. This species has been found between 700 and 1,000 m above sea level.
There is no population information available for this species, which was only rediscovered in the vicinity of the type locality in 2007 (M. Menegon pers. comm. 2010) and was not previously known to have been recorded since the 1920s (Spawls et al. 2002).
