Gigantopithecus would be Yeti and Sasquatch... Yes, this is possible. Many. many legends actually happen to have been born from true roots. See, as an example, the unicorn, which actually was a herd of tibetan goats with their horns artificially welded together (see Timbs on Unicorns topic). Or the scandinavian Kraken, which is the Colossal Squid. Historians even suggested that the Lung (chinese dragon) took form from Mamenchisaurus bones found by Ancient Asians. So, Yeti being Gigantipithecus... yes, this is possible.

@bowhead Whale: The true origin of the unicorn is still unclear, and there are several good and plausible explanations. The colossal squid Mesonychoteuthis is surely not responsible for the Kraken, because it is an antarctic species. The chinese dragons have their origins perhaps in living reptiles like crocodiles, alligators or monitors, or probably in skeletons of extinct reptiles, but in this case sauropods are lesser probable.

Sordes, the origin of unicorns IS clear. Just look further. In Timbs on Unicorns topic (Cryptozoology), I talk about it and I even brought pictures: an ancient bouddhist unicorn picture, as well as a goat with its horns welded, following the ancient tibetan tradition. Please, look there.

Anyway, here is my source about unicorns: (french book): Le Livre de la Licorne; mythes et réalités Author: Yvonne Caroutch Editor: Puiseaux: Pardès, 1989. 243 pages.
It's a book written in a very bad style; however, the history of the subject is very well sourced, and has many, many ancient pictures and ancient textes to prove her theory. I brought two of them in the Cryptozoology thread.
