Taxonomic Comments: This species seems to be quite similar to P. RUBELLUM. Simpson (1914) may have confused the identity of P. RUBELLUM as such and if P. VERUM is a valid species, records for VERA may be misidentified as RUBELLUM.

Not much is known about the habitat of this species. May exhibit habitat preferences similar to P. RUBELLUM.

This was formerly a Alabama River and Cahaba River below the Fall Line, Alabama, endemic but is now considered extinct (Mirarchi, 2004; Williams et al., 2008). Burch (1975) listed the Black Warrior and Cahawba [= Cahaba] (Perry Co.) River drainages in Alabama likely cited from Simpson (1914) although the Black Warrior River citation is likely in error.
