Historically, this species occurred in the Tennessee River system, Virginia, Tennessee, and Alabama. Parmalee and Bogan (1998) cite historical Tennessee distribution as the headwaters of the Clinch River, North Fork and South Fork Holston River, the Holston River in northeast Tennessee, and in the Tennessee River at Knoxville (Ortmann, 1918; Johnson, 1978). In Alabama, it was known from the Paint Rock River system but has not been reported since the early Twentieth Century (Mirarchi, 2004).

What was apparently the last known population (Stones River) was destroyed with the completion of the J. Percy Priest Dam (1967) and this species is presumed extinct (Stansberry, 1971) possibly since 1965. In Alabama it was known only from the Paint Rock River system with no dated museum specimens but reports from 1918 (Williams et al., 2008).
