Endemic to the Koolau Mountains. The three post-1945 records are from the Pupukea-Kahuku region. Historically the species is found from Waimea & Pupukea southward to Hau'ula & Ka'a'awa, a distance of 12 miles (B14PIL01). This species was originally described Waimea, Pupukea, Waialea, and Kahuku, Oahu, Hawaiian Islands (Johnson, 1996).

Three post-1945 records (1951 & 1967), one of which is doubtful. Likely extinct (Hawaii Biological Survey web site http:/hbs.bishopmuseum.org/endangered/ext-snails.html, updated 9 February 1997).

In the 1992 recovery plan for the O`ahu tree snails of the genus Achatinella, Achatinella dimorpha was classified as having the status of possibly extant. A. dimorpha was historically located in the northern half of the Ko`olau Mountains with most of its range on the windward slopes (USFWS 1992). Portions of its historical range overlap the US Army’s Kahuku Training Area, Kawailoa Training Area, and Schofield Barracks East Range. The most recent field sighting of A. dimorpha was in 1967 on the Pupukea Trail and at Paumaulu-Kaunala (USFWS 1992). In April and September of 2009, surveys conducted within the historical range resulted in no living snails or shells of A. dimorpha.
