Foie Gras (fatty liver) is derived from the French term and it is a delicacy that the elite enjoy. It is manufactured from ducks and geese through force feeding. This is one of the cruelest and barbaric forms of torture to animals.
Foie Gras dates back to 2 500 BC to Egyptian times when geese were taken and then slaughtered for the liver, which was a delicacy then in Egypt. Today, France is the largest producer and supplier of Foie Gras, supplying 80% in total of the world's demand. France, therefore, is the largest culprit of all countries that practice this abusive trade.
What these graceful birds of paradise endure;
The geese and ducks are kept in isolation during the force feeding period to make handling easier. They are kept in conditions where they can not turn around or perform any natural behaviours and sanitary conditions are very poor.
The birds become extremely stressed during force feeding. The procedure is very painful and most uncomfortable. Injuries and deaths are very common. The force feeding process increases the size of the liver ten fold and the birds rapidly become obese. Their weight increases by 80%-90%, the liver becomes 50% fat and stops working properly.
The birds' obesity leads to respiratory stress and reduced mobility. Many birds lose the ability to walk and some birds become so obese they die because they can't move to access water. Obese birds are much more susceptible to heat and stress during transport and slaughter and many end up with injuries including broken limbs.
