Red Data Okinawa Revised: Okinawa Prefecture's Threatened Wildlife 3rd Edition (Animals).
Distinction from similar species: Similar to A. sp. in Hokkaido, A. hiradoensis Habe, 1942 from Mutsu Bay to Tanegashima, A. sp. in Amami Oshima, and A. liaotungensis Habe, 1943 from the Liaodong Peninsula to Korea, but much thicker. Also similar to A. lutea (A. Adams, 1861) from mainland China, but the latter species has spiral ribs above the spiral layer and below the suture.
Distribution: Okinawa Island (Nago, Naha), Yonaguni Island.
Trends in population: The National Museum of Nature and Science holds specimens from Naha and Nago (Mo38980, 72806), and the Osaka Museum of Natural History holds specimens from Yonaguni (#2852ā2863) (all collection dates unknown). The Philadelphia Academy of Sciences in the United States also holds nine specimens (#193385) from N. side Naha, collected on June 6, 1945. All of these specimens have the lid and dried soft body, so they are thought to have been live shells at the time of collection. However, no similar specimens have been found in the Nansei Islands since the war, and it is highly likely that they became extinct in recent years (1950sā60s?).
Threats to survival: It is presumed that the entire population, which originally only existed in a small area, was wiped out due to urbanization and public works-related changes to the river mouth, mangrove felling, water and soil pollution, etc.
