Snail from New Zealand. Not seen since its discovery in 1972.
Scientific Name: Kuschelita inflata
Species Authority: Climo, 1974
Assessment Information [top]
Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2013
Date Assessed: 2011-07-28
Assessor(s): Collier, K.
Reviewer(s): Brooks, E. & Moore, S.
Justification:
This species is only known from its type location (and type series collected in the 1970s), from a bore near Napier, New Zealand, where it will be affected by groundwater abstraction and pollution, predominantly from agricultural sources. The species is a subterranean species and more research is needed to identify the species' full distribution and full impacts of the threats. However based on the current available information the species qualifies for Critically Endangered (EOO and AOO both less than CR threshold, 1 location based on the likely impacts of groundwater pollution and abstraction, and a continuing decline in the quality of habitat). If the species is found to be more widespread it may qualify for a less threatened category.
Geographic Range [top]
Range Description: This species is known only from the type series (collected in 1970s) at a single bore, near Napier, North Island, New Zealand (Haase 2008).
Countries:
Native:
New Zealand (North Is.)
Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range.
Population [top]
Population: No information available.
Population Trend: Unknown
Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology: This is a subterranean species, found within an underground aquifer (Haase 2008).
Systems: Freshwater
Use and Trade [top]
Use and Trade: This species is not utilized.
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s): This species will be affected by groundwater abstraction and groundwater pollution, predominantly from agricultural sources. Based on knowledge of hydrobiid snail environmental tolerances in the northern hemisphere, this species is likely to require good water quality making it vulnerable to pollution events (e.g. nitrates permeating into groundwater) or over-extraction of groundwater for agriculture or domestic use situations where land development influences snail habitats.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions: Monitoring of this species is required, along with more information on its full distribution, ecology, and impacts of threats.
