The present species was described by Künkel (1916), who in a later publication provided the information that the type was collected from the mountains around Gengenbach (city) in the Black Forest, Baden-Württemberg, southern Germany. It has not been recorded since then and is considered extinct (Arbeitsgruppe Mollusken BW 2008). However, Wiese (2014) claims it could be widespread in old, highly natural forests, but rare and overlooked or mistaken for Arion subfuscus. The author does not have any data himself (V. Wiese pers. comm.). The similar species (complex) Arion subfuscus also favours broadleaved forests and might be confused with the present species, which is larger sized than Arion subfuscus.
It is unknown. It seems to occur at only one location. The slug has never been found after its description and is classified as "Extinct" in regional lists.
