This species is endemic to France, where it was originally described from floodline debris of the river Lez (Department Herault) It is considered to be endemic to the Lez drainage basin. Falkner et al. (2002) suggested three possible sites; the resurgences along the bed of the River Lez, springs at Cauquillade, Aniane, Department Herault; Moulin de St Guilherm-le-Desert. This species is possibly extinct, as it has not been found in recent years (V. Prie pers. comm. 2009). The EOO is estimated as 49 km2, based on observed data from two sites, both fed by the same groundwater source. There are no records in northern part of the Lez catchment, despite active recording, and no records in southern part, which contains Montepellier, and hence little pristine habitat.
The genus Bythinella Moquin-Tandon, 1856 in the French Languedoc (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda: Truncatelloidea).
A review of the genus Bythinella in the French Languedoc is provided. The genus is represented in this region, from the Pyrenees to the Rhône, by 6 species: B. tejedoi Boeters, 2019, B. companyoi (Paladilhe, 1870), B. eurystoma (Paladilhe, 1870), B. eutrepha (Paladilhe, 1867), B. cebennensis (Dupuy, 1849), and B. anianensis (Paladilhe, 1870). For each species, I summarise the diagnostic morphological characters, including shell morphology and genital anatomy, as well as information on habitats and distribution. A determination key is also provided. Bythinia (Bythinella) ferussina webbiana Moquin-Tandon, 1856 is regarded as junior synonym of Bythinella cebennensis(Dupuy, 1849).
