This is exemplified by species such as C. jourdani from St Helena which is only known from ‘dead’ shells washed onto the beach in one small bay; C. bellulus and C. luteus which have not been reported since the 1970s; C. splendidulus which has not been seen in 20 years and C. sauros which is possibly extinct."

This species is found from Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico to Veracruz in Mexico (Petuch, Kohn and Coltro pers. comm. 2011).
There are only 9 specimens of this species which were all collected dead. This lack of living specimens may indicate that this is an extinct fossil species from the late Pleistocene (Kohn and Petuch pers. comm. 2011).
