ANNUAL REPORT – COREL PROGRAMME April 2016 – March 2017 PROGRESS THIS YEAR (2016/2017) • Continued searching for the butterfly on the Brenton peninsula, with no success. • Harvard University’s preliminary findings from their DNA analysis have shown that mithras is a separate taxon from the thysbe populations occurring between Mossel Bay and Cape Aghulas, and that the Brenton populations are the only known occurrence of this taxon, which may therefore be extinct. • A development proposal by the owner (Investec) for the properties where the butterfly was last known to fly was resisted on conservation grounds. The developer is reconsidering the proposal, and has actually put both of the properties on the market for sale. PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR (2017/2018) • Clearance of the aliens off the Investec properties and restoration of the habitat is probably the last hope to save this species and it may be necessary to pursue legal action against the owner to achieve this. • Investigate old record of this butterfly at Goesabos in the Tsitsikamma National Park www.brentonbluetrust.co.za/corel-reports/
