Thylogale christeni Hope 1981 was a tiny wallaby, perhaps the size of Dorcopsulus vanheurni, the smallest living new guinean macropodid. Its remains have been found in holocene sediments at mapala rockshelter (3900 metres elevation), billingeek rockshelter(3700 elevation) and in pleistocene sediments in kelangurr cave (2950 metres elevation), all in the western maokop, irian jaya (hope 1981, flannery 1992a, hope et al. 1993). In all situations, associated with a fauna typical of subalpine grassland or tundra. extinction may also coincide with the introduction of the dog, as they survived until 3,000 years ago at billingeek rockshelter in the prinz wilhelm v range (hope et al 1993).
