An expedition made by Spanish and German biologists in 1992 has rediscovered a snail which thought to be extinct since the 19th century. Hemicycla saulcyi was first described by D'Orbigny in 1839. The team consisted of the scientists Dr. Klaus Groh, Dr. Maria R. Alonso, Dr. Miguel Ibáñez, and Dr. Fátima C. Henríquez from the Univertity of La Laguna found some specimens alive in a lava field on La Isleta, Gran Canaria. Nevertheless according to the Dr Ibañez "this species is certainly in danger of extinction, and in case the army leaves the zone had to be guaranteed the protection of its habitat"
