Family/Sub-family ANATIDAE Species name author Cowles, 1994 Taxonomic source(s) Summary Mascarenachen kervazoi is known only from subfossil bones collected by Bertrand Kervazo in the Grottes des Premiers Français on Réunion (to France) in 19742. Nontekoe mentioned finding geese on the island when he visited in 1619, as did Dubois in 1671-2, but as early as 1667 Martin recorded destruction of the wildfowl and habitat of the Etang de Saint-Paul, and the species was specifically mentioned to have become extinct by Boucher in 17101. The specimens are deposited in the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris2. www.birdlife.net/datazone/search/species_search.html?action=SpcHTMDetails.asp&sid=30240&m=0

In: Mourer-Chauviré, C. et al. Recent avian extinctions on Réunion (Mascarene Islands) from paleontological and historical sources. Bull B.O.C. 2006 126A
Alopochen (Mascarenachen) kervazoi (Cowles, 1994), Kervazo's Egyptian Goose
Several reports mention the presence of geese, but only until the time of Dubois, who gave the most detailed description: 'wild geese, slightly smaller than the European geese. They have the same feathering, but with the bill and feet red. They are very good [to eat]' (Barré & Barau 1982, our translation). The identification of this goose as closely related to Alopochen aegyptiacus, Egyptian Goose, agrees well with Dubois' description of the bill and feet. The extinct goose of Réunion, and the extinct Malagasy Goose Alopochen sirabensis, exhibit a slight reduction in the length of the wing elements (ulna a carpometacarpus), and a slight increase in the length of the femur.
