Ryukyu Pigeon Columba jouyi was endemic to Okinawa and Kerama, and the Daito Islands, in the Nansei Shoto Islands, Japan. It was described in 1887 from a type in the Tokyo Educational Museum, and is also known from three skins in Tring. It apparently declined rapidly (and inexplicably), and was last recorded on Okinawa in 1904, and on Daito in 1936.

There is painting of the Ryukiu Wood Pigeon in "The Gap in Nature" but this one has blueish neck.

In Fuller (2002) Extinct Birds (Foreword - HBW7) Ryukyu Woodpigeon Columba jouyiColumba jouyi Stejneger, 1887 Amer. Nat. 21: 583.This species, closely related to the last [ Columba versicolor], ocurred on the Ryukyu and Daito Islands, another of the islands groups to the south of Japan. It was last recorded on the Daito Islands during 1936. Although certainly extinct on Okinawa where it was last seen in 1904, the species may possibly cling to existence on some of the smaller islands. Like its relative it appears to have required heavily forested country. Nothing is known of the bird in life and reasons for its disappearance are unclear.
