MZUT AV2962; previously mounted; unsexed adult; New Zealand, no date; purchased by F. Defilippi for MZUT, in 1846.

MZUT AV4244; previously mounted; unsexed adult; New Zealand, no date; purchased in Milano by G. Gené for MZUT, in September 1844.

Remarks.—Filippo Defilippi (1814–67) succeeded G. Gené as head of the Zoological Museum of Torino, of which he was director in 1848–67. It is probable that at least MZUT AV4244 has the same provenance as one of two specimens in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano (no. 12968, unsexed, mounted, from ‘Nov. Zealand’). Based on a manuscript catalogue produced by Defilippi, we know that it was purchased from L. Colombo in 1844 (Violani et al. 1984).

Extinct and endangered (‘E&E’) birds in the ornithological collection of Le Beffroi Musée Boucher de Perthes-Manessier, Abbeville, France.

Le Beffroi Musée Boucher de Perthes-Manessier, Abbeville, France, houses an ornithological collection totalling 2,597 mounted birds, principally from the 19th century. According to the current IUCN Red List of threatened species, the mounts represent 112 extinct or endangered (‘E&E’) bird taxa (156 specimens in total). We list the specimens of ‘E&E’ taxa that merit special curatorial attention. The list includes nine Extinct taxa (Greater Prairie Chicken Tympanuchus c. cupido, Passenger Pigeon Ectopistes migratorius, Snail-eating Coua Coua delalandei, Great Auk Pinguinus impennis, Norfolk Island Kaka Nestor productus, Carolina Parakeet Conuropsis carolinensis, Nuku Hiva Monarch Pomarea nukuhivae, South Island Piopio Turnagra c. capensis and Slender-billed Grackle Quiscalus palustris), one Extinct in the Wild (Guam Kingfisher Todiramphus cinnamominus) and 38 threatened species and subspecies. In addition to IUCN status, the EDGE (Evolutionary Distinctiveness and Globally Endangered) score for each species is specified.

Augustus Hamilton’s fossil collection at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Augustus Hamilton (1853–1913) was a New Zealand ethnologist and naturalist who amassed a significant collection of fossils, mostly of birds, during his career. Today, those fossils are housed in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (NMNZ). While some fossils have been catalogued and integrated into the collection of the NMNZ, a large part remained unsorted and uncatalogued. The present study brings an integrated view of Hamilton’s collection at the NMNZ, highlighting the most significant fossils. In total, there are 3692 specimen lots collected by Hamilton in the NMNZ representing a large sample of taxa and a wide range of locations around Aotearoa New Zealand. Most fossils are of Holocene age and belong to birds. The collection includes type specimens, circa 250 specimen lots belonging to extinct species, and specimens belonging to otherwise poorly represented species in natural history collections. We hope that our study makes Hamilton’s fossils visible and more readily available for future research.
